Picturesque Porto

Filled with a labyrinthine maze of cobblestone streets, faded pastel-hued buildings, stunning architecture and a melting pot of different cultures, the picture-perfect Porto is a city impossible not to fall in love with. Ditch the map, at least for a day, and let your feet lead you around its many charms - look out for the insta-worthy azulejos, intricate tiled murals that can be found everywhere, as well as vibrant contemporary street art in unexpected places, stopping off for refreshments in open-air cafes along the way. Being the home of the dessert wine, port, it’s no surprise that Porto has a thriving culinary scene - nibble on flaky, indulgent Portuguese tarts, or tuck into a hearty francesinha sandwich, packed with steak, sausage and cheese before being drenched in sauce and gravy, and of course, sample plenty of port at the many port houses along the riverside.

As one of Europe’s most important trading centres over the centuries, you’ll find the legacy of countless civilisations here, from a 600 year old Customs House to an ornate 15th-century Baroque church, and the crumbling remnants of medieval city walls. For some of the city’s most iconic sights, make a beeline for Baixa, where you can take in dramatic views from the top of the Clérigos Tower, or slow down with a serene stroll through the gardens at the Palácio de Crista. And if your feet start to get a little weary, hop onto one of the old trams still in service, where you can marvel at a scenic ride from the old city all the way down to the coast, or enjoy a picturesque cruise along the river. Be sure to try a detour into the riverside neighbourhood, Ribeira, where you can soak up the atmosphere in its medieval alleys, before grabbing a riverside table with a stunning view, to sip a glass of port as the sun sets over the terracotta rooftops.
