Exploring Istria
Croatia has become a popular destination with holidaymakers in recent years, and it’s easy to understand why. The west coast of Istria boasts beautiful beaches, a rocky and intriguing coastline, and colourful, ancient port towns just waiting to be visited. The charming harbour town of Rovinj is a must, with its winding streets and multicoloured buildings perched above sparkling water. The ancient Roman town of Poreč is equally charming and has a 6-th century World Heritage-listed basilica. A little further to the south of the peninsula you will find the fishing village of Fažana, the starting point for a trip to the Brijuni Islands, an archipelago of unspoiled nature. The main city of Pula is a fantastic place to spend a day with its wealth of Roman architecture including the Arena and the Temple of Augustus.
The interior of Istria is just as appealing. Less popular with tourists, here you will find unspoilt rolling hilly landscapes and medieval hilltop towns. Visit Motovun, a small, fortified town perched on a hilltop in central Istria and well worth a day trip. Istria prides itself on its gastronomy and during your stay you’re sure to enjoy an array of Mediterranean specialities, including olives, truffles, freshly caught seafood and local wines. But importantly, the west coast boasts some fine beaches, so after all this exploring, don’t forget to simply relax on the beach and soak up the Mediterranean sun!
