Characterful Colombo is a fascinating mishmash of old and new. Discover Fort, the former British administrative centre and military garrison, as well as Sea Street, Kayman’s Gate, the Dutch Church, the BMICH, Independence Square and various places of worship, indicative of the city’s colourful melting-pot culture. Tour duration: 4.5 hours. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way can be arranged for USD 15 per person.
•Full-day whale watching tour•
Take a boat trip from Dondra Point or Mirissa, where sperm whales and blue whales, the largest mammal on Earth, can often be spotted between November and April. Tour duration: 9.5 hours. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way can be arranged for USD 10 per person.
•Yala National Park day trip•
Set off early for a visit to the astounding Yala National Park, where alongside the Asiatic elephant, you can spot water buffalo, sloth bears, the elusive leopard, exotic birdlife and more. Drive: approximately 3.5 hours. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way can be arranged for USD 15 per person. A compulsory entrance fee of USD 45 applies per person. Galle city tour can be added for USD 10 per person.
