Tenerife's north coast is most famous for its volcanic black sands, banana plantations, quaint harbour and the pretty old town of Puerto de la Cruz. Must-dos include marvelling at 5,000 exotic trees and plants at the superb Botanico Gardens at La Paz, getting up close with parrots, penguins and dolphins at Loro Parque, and taking the cable car to the summit of Mount Teide – Spain’s highest mountain at 3,718 metres. It’s also well worth visiting the cosmopolitan capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife for its quirky boutiques, brightly-painted buildings, inspiring art galleries, and Sunday’s huge flea market.
