Madeira levada walks
Miles of scenic strolling, rampant rambling and happy hiking awaits you in Madeira. However easy or hard you want to take these levada walks, you can count on a mountain range of countryside to take your breath away.
You’ll be able to pick and choose the walking routes yourself, and while all are beautiful, they’re all a little bit different. Queimadas/Caldeirão Verde, for example, is Madeira's oldest levada and takes you past waterfalls, seascapes and mountains, as well as the Natural Park of Queimadas, and trekking Ribeiro Frio/Portela keeps the unusual, but renowned, Penha D’Aguia rock in the background. Meanwhile, Maroços is a relaxing walk through mountains and valleys, amidst amazing vegetation, and if you want to keep the sea in sight all day, Levada da Serra do Faial is the route for you. Other high points include an extra excursion to Pico Ruivo, which at 1,860 metres is the island’s highest peak, and Ponta de São Lourenço – the island’s most easterly point.
