Day 1: UK - Amman, Jordan

Arriving in Amman, you'll be greeted at the airport and will stay overnight in the city at the lavish Bristol Hotel.

Day 2: Amman - Jerash - Ajloun - Dead Sea

Today, you'll witness the ancient Roman city of Jerash, from its colonnaded streets, hilltop temples and theatres to its public squares, baths and city walls. Afterwards, you'll travel to northern Jordan to see one of the Middle East's most important ecological and historical sites - Ajloun. Built in 1184 AD to scupper the Crusaders, the astonishing hilltop Ajloun Castle (Qal'at Ar~Rabad) is a fine example of Islamic architecture. You'll then drive an hour and a half south to the Dead Sea, where you'll have dinner and stay overnight in contemporary luxury at Holiday Inn Resort Dead Sea.

Day 3: Dead Sea

You have a day to yourselves, schedule-free, at the pampering Holiday Inn Resort Dead Sea. Stretch out on the private slice of sand by the Dead Sea's blissfully still water or laze beatifically in the Jacuzzi at the heart of the immaculate, shorefront swimming pool. You'll have dinner and enjoy a luxe overnight stay.

Day 4: Dead Sea - Madaba - Mount Nebo - Shobak - Petra

Around 40 minutes' drive from the hotel, the city of Madaba is home to the renowned 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land that was discovered and henceforth preserved on the floor of the Greek Orthodox St George's Church. Gaze at the intricate Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics before driving nine kilometres out of the city to Mount Nebo - mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was shown the Promised Land that he wasn't permitted to enter. It's then time to drive 200 kilometres south to the eye-popping Shobak Castle, built by the Crusader king Baldwin I in 1115 and still looking mighty atop its hill amid rugged land. You'll finally drive around half an hour to your own form of contemporary castle near Petra, Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel, where you'll have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 5: Petra

You'll be awed into silence at the majestic Nabatean city of Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast sandstone city holds hundreds of tombs elaborately cut into the rock, a treasury, a Roman-style theatre carved out of the pinkish bedrock, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets. Dazzled and inspired, you'll then return to Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Petra - Wadi Rum Jeep ride

From Petra's commanding ruins, you'll travel further south into the magical desert of Wadi Rum, described by T.E. Lawrence as "Vast, echoing and god-like" and named by the locals as the Valley of the Moon. You'll zoom over this unforgettable lunar landscape on a two-hour Jeep ride, before dining Bedouin-style beneath the stars and staying in an evocative tent at family-run Hasan Zawaideh Camp.

Day 7: Wadi Rum - Amman

After breakfast, you will be transferred to your hotel in Amman, Jordan’s jaw-dropping capital, a hubbub of culinary wonder and ancient sights. While you’re here, try some of the country’s best dishes in long-standing eateries. Hashem is a no-reservations, no-cutlery, no-menu institution, where soft falafel dipped in houmous is eaten by hand. Habibah Sweets serve what many profess is Jordan’s best kunafeh, a sweet-turned-savoury treat of pastry and cheese drowned in rose-flavoured syrup - a taste not to be missed.

Day 8: Amman - UK

After breakfast, you'll travel to Queen Alia International Airport and fly back to the UK.
