Gorgeous Gouves

Celebrated for its Blue Flag-awarded beach backed by glittering Aegean waters, Kato Gouves is a great spot if you want to get out and explore Crete’s northern coast. Must-dos include visiting the old village of Pano Gouves built into the side of Mount Ederi, taking to the waters in a pedalo or canoe, and hitting the numerous cafés and bars that line the seafront promenade.

Elsewhere on the island, highlights include hiking the 16-kilometre-long trail at Samaria Gorge, admiring the spectacularly unspoilt beaches of Falassarna or Balos Lagoon, and taking a boat trip to see the fortified Thodorou Island - breeding-ground of the protected Kri-Kri mountain goat. For a cultural fix, Crete’s capital Heraklion is a 20-minute drive or taxi ride away, and well worth the effort for its fascinating Venetian Fortress, Archaeological Museum, and legendary Palace of Knossos.
