Bonn
The birthplace of Beethoven and the former capital of West Germany, historic Bonn is full of culture and character. Original manuscripts and instruments can be found at The Beethoven House, and true aficionados can’t miss the Beethoven Fest Bonn, a classic musical festival that runs from mid-September to mid-October. To be spoiled for cultural choice, head to the Museumsmeile (Museum Mile) to see an array of international masterpieces.
In the centre of the city, you can find the striking Bonn Cathedral, where certain parts of the building date from the 11th and 12th centuries. If you're a history fan, then there's no better place to go than the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, which covers the years from the end of WWII to the reunification of Germany after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
