Florence

You’ll be staying in Santa Croce, the district most famous for its Basilica di Santa Croce that probably contains more Renaissance tombs than any other in Italy (Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galilei, Rossini, and more). There's a plethora of bars and cafés nearby, many of which are open until late so you can soak up the lively local atmosphere.


Must-dos in the Tuscan capital include drooling over huge Botticelli paintings at the incredible Uffizi Gallery, marvelling at Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell'Accademia, climbing the Cathedral's dome and Giotto’s Tower, and checking out the collection of botanical and zoological specimens at La Specola – Florence University’s natural history museum.

Shopaholics should make a beeline for Via Tornabuoni, the centre of Florence's luxury fashion scene where window-shopping is very much in order. Elsewhere, don't miss people-watching in Piazza della Signoria, and ravishing city views from Piazzale Michelangelo on the banks of the Arno River.
