At the heart of it all is the imposing 16th-century Sé Cathedral, which is well worth a visit, and the city-centre’s quaint streets are lined with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants from which to sample local living and regional flavours. No trip to the so-called “Garden Isle” would be complete without a tour through its magnificent botanical gardens. Start just East of the city centre at the English-style Palheiro Gardens, then take the famous cable car up to the Monte area to see the Madeira Botanical Garden and historic Monte Palace Tropical Garden, as well as breathtaking panoramic views over the city and ocean beyond.
