Anklam
Take a leap into a little-known corner of northeast Germany's least densely populated state, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for utmost peace and untouched nature in the biodiverse Peene Valley, known as the "Amazon of Germany". Your on-trend hotel in Anklam sits at the entrance to this wonderland, and you can explore the home of white-tailed eagles, beavers and rare plant species via solar-powered boat or canoe, or on marshland hikes or bike rides.
For another adventure, drive 15 minutes to cross Zecheriner Bridge over to Usedom Island, Germany's second-largest island and a unique getaway spot treasured by locals. Usedom Island Nature Park varies from pine tree-covered dunes to lakes and marshy lowland, humming with birdlife and fish and laced with cycle routes. There are also 42 kilometres of fine-sand beach here to stroll along, next to the Baltic Sea.
An hour's drive northwest of the hotel reveals the UNESCO-listed, medieval town centre of Stralsund with its colourful houses and fairy-tale vibe. Back in Anklam, learn about the first man to fly gliders at the Otto Lilienthal Museum and stroll the streets of this handsome riverside town, speckled with medieval buildings.
