Palazzo Guiscardo lies 35 kilometres from the walled city of Lucca, famous for its cobbled streets, Renaissance-style piazzas and cosy cafés to shade yourself from the midday sun. For those wanting to seek the sun, head to Forte dei Marmi beach, an easy 10-minute drive from both Pietrasanta and Palazzo Guiscardo. The hotel offers bicycle rentals, too, so the more active can explore the countryside to their heart's content. The iconic Cinque Terre, which has graced many a postcard with its multicolours houses spilling down the cliffside, can be reached in roughly an hour by car or a touch longer by train (which is recommended).
