Argostolion
As one of the largest islands in the Ionian chain strung out along Greece's western coastline, the jewel that is Kefalonia shot to fame as the setting of Louis de Bernières' wartime novel – and later film – Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Years later, it still feels like a relatively undiscovered secret with its unspoiled olive grove landscapes, blissful beaches, and characterful towns and villages.
Lazy days can be spent hanging out in the cool bars and cafés that line the waterfront, stocking up on fresh fruit from the buzzy market, and heading north of Sami to visit Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake, 40 minutes away.
