Bohemian energy: Tire yourself out for the spa with games of tennis on the six onsite clay courts and two padel tennis courts. Equipment can be rented or bought here too. Mariánské Lázně's lido is a lovely place to swim immersed in nature, and the town's Royal Golf Club was opened by England's King Edward VII in 1905.

The journey from Václav Havel Airport Prague is around two hours by car (166 kilometres). We recommend you hire a car, as the journey takes around four and a half hours by public transport.

Cheltenham
With the Western Bohemia spa towns having been recently included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, there's even more reason to visit Mariánské Lázně, one of the three Czech spa towns that makes up the treasured triangle. This small yet regal town holds ornate buildings painted in pretty colours and a multicoloured singing fountain that performs every two hours. Walk the 15 minutes up to this joyful oddball phenomenon, hopefully catching a live concert at the nearby Neo-Baroque Colonnade. The spa town's first spring is carefully housed here too and you can fill your water bottle with its goodness. You can also do the same at Ferdinand Spring, only five minutes' stroll from your door.
Head into the surrounding Slavkov Forest for bike rides and hikes, or ride the cable car (bikes included) from April to October. In winter, Mariánské Lázně turns into a ski resort and cross-country skiing is magical in the forest.
For an even grander spa town where the Russian Tsar Peter the Great arrived for treatments in the early 1700s, drive the 45 minutes up to Karlovy Vary to admire the rich architecture and sample the cherished local water from taps at the impressive Mill Colonnade. Prague and all its tempting sights is just over two hours' drive from the hotel and possible for a day trip.
