Days 1-2: Valencia, Spain
A sun-kissed coastal city boasting over 12 kilometres of sandy beaches, UNESCO-listed historical treasures and stunning architecture, Valencia is a colourful and captivating Spanish gem. Being the birthplace of the classic Spanish dish paella, as well as boasting excellent seafood and tapas, food lovers will have plenty to enjoy here, while the vibrant Old Town is a perfect place for a stroll.
On day 2, you'll board the MSC Magnifica, where your cruise around the Mediterranean coast begins. If you're on the 10-night itinerary, you'll board on day 4.
Day 3: Tarragona, Spain
Your first stop is the historic Roman city of Tarragona, a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its well-preserved ruins. The lively port city also has a charming Old Town, featuring a magnificent cathedral, while its miles of sandy beaches provide an idyllic place for a dip or a beachside drink.
Day 4: Toulon, France
An underrated treasure on the French Riviera, Toulon is a picturesque port city renowned for its rugby sporting heritage and captivating Provencal views. Head up the cable car to the top of Mount Faron for breathtaking panoramas over the Mediterranean, or relax by the waterfront at the atmospheric harbour. As a naval base, Toulon is also home to fascinating museums and memorials, including the Musée Mémorial du Débarquement, a World War II fortress and monument to the liberation of Provence in 1944.
Day 5: Genoa, Italy
Known as the gateway to Italy’s glamorous riviera, the port town of Genoa is a striking symphony of mediaeval charm, vibrant colour and seafront bliss. Wander the winding streets and admire the Piazza Matteotti, or the magnificent La Lanterna, the towering lighthouse that harks back to the town’s naval heritage. You could use Genoa as your base for exploring Portofino, a fishing village famous for its pastel houses, high-end boutiques and exceptional seafood.
Day 6: Civitavecchia, Italy
Docking in the Italian port of Civitavecchia gives you ample time to head into alluring Rome via train, taking just over an hour. Arguably the dreamiest of Europe's cities, with its incredible, powerful monuments still basking beneath Roman sun thousands of years on, you'll be enchanted by images of gladiators battling in the magnificent Colosseum, Michelangelo's spectacular frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, the near-perfectly preserved Pantheon church and many more awe-inspiring sights.
Day 7: Livorno, Italy
On the west coast of Tuscany, Livorno is a lively port city that’s also well-known for its seafood, as well as its proximity to Italy’s great art cities – Florence and Pisa. Why not explore Pisa, where you’ll be able to see the Piazza dei Moracoli and pretend to hold up the world-famous leaning tower in front of a camera, or journey on to Florence for a day, where the Piazzale Michelangelo, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and works by Caravaggio, Raphael and da Vinci all await? Alternatively, set off on a memorable trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park of Cinque Terre.
Day 8: At sea
Enjoy your last night aboard the MSC Magnifica before you return back to Valencia. The next day, you'll fly back home.
