Day 1: UK - Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island
Welcome to São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago, known for its breath-taking volcanic scenery, beautiful flora and captivating marine life. After your arrival, transfer to your chosen hotel in Ponta Delgada for check-in and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, soaking up the striking Gothic architecture of the capital of the Azores.
Day 2: Ponta Delgada - Vila Franca do Campo - Furnas Valley - Ponta Delgada
After breakfast at the hotel, get ready for an action-packed day of sightseeing in the Furnas Valley, known for its volcanic activity and hot springs. You'll set off to Vila Franca do Campo, once the capital of the Azores, where you can sample delicious traditional pastries known locally as Queijadas da Vila. Next, descend into the Furnas Valley, starting with a visit to Terra Nostra Park, a shining example of the romantic 18th-century gardens of the Azores. Admire its rich and fragrant vegetation, with the option of enjoying a relaxing dip in a thermal pool. Later you'll head to the Caldeiras, situated next to the famous Furnas Lake, to watch a cooking demonstration using the natural heat of the caldeiras. Tuck into traditional cozido for lunch at a local restaurant, before exploring more of the sights of the Furnas Valley and learning about everyday life in this volcanic environment. On the way back to Ponta Delgada, you'll stop at the Pico do Ferro viewpoint for unforgettable views of this unique landscape.
Day 3: Ponta Delgada - Lagoa do Fogo - Ribeira - Ponta Delgada
After breakfast at the hotel, you'll journey to Lagoa do Fogo, a fascinating volcanic crater lake in the centre of the island. Travel down the south coast in the direction of Pico da Barrosa, from where you can admire views of the lake. Descend to Caldeira Velha next, where you'll have the opportunity to bathe in hot water springs, before heading to historic Ribeira for a walking tour of its old town. Admire the quaint architecture and stop to sample traditional local liqueurs, before returning to Ponta Delgada via the picturesque north coast route. The rest of the day will be free for you to spend at your leisure.
Day 4: Ponta Delgada - Sete Cidades - Ponta Delgada
After breakfast at the hotel, set off to discover the epic natural wonder of Sete Cidades, a three-mile-long volcanic crater lake that's home to all kinds of fascinating sights. Begin with a pineapple plantation tour to observe the growing phases of this tropical fruit and taste locally-made liqueur. Continue on to the stunning Pico Carvão, which enjoys brilliant views across the central part of São Miguel Island. At the Vista do Rei viewpoint you'll soak up incredible landscapes across Sete Cidades, before descending into the crater to admire the Lagoa de Santiago. Return to Ponta Delgada and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Days 5-7: Ponta Delgada
The next few days in Ponta Delgada will be yours to spend at leisure, giving you plenty of time to uncover more sights and sounds of São Miguel Island. Start by ticking off city icons like the 16th-century Church of St. Sebastian and the Convent and Chapel of Our Lady of Hope, and perhaps top it up with a spot of shopping and delicious local cuisine.
Day 8: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island - UK
After breakfast, check out of your hotel and, at the indicated time, transfer to São Miguel Azores Airport for your return flight to the UK, where your trip comes to an end.
