Days 1-2: UK - Beijing, China
You'll fly from the UK to Beijing, the magnificent capital of China. After arriving, your transfer will take you to your hotel.
Days 3-5: Beijing
The next few days are dedicated to immersing yourself in all that Beijing has to offer, and as a city packed with culture and history, there's no end of fascinating sights to discover.
On day 3, head on an exciting excursion. Journey through the scenic countryside to the awe-inspiring Juyongguan, the best-preserved section of the Great Wall. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, once visible from space, stands as a testament to China's past. Delve deeper into history with a stop at a captivating Jade exhibition before arriving at the Wall, where you'll learn about its fascinating past on a guided tour or walk along its ancient ramparts. On your return to Beijing, be dazzled by the architectural feats of the Bird's Nest Stadium and Water Cube Aquatics Centre within the Olympic Park.
On day 4, there's more must-sees to enjoy. Start with Tiananmen Square, the vast heart of the city, before stepping into the Forbidden City, a sprawling palace complex that housed emperors for centuries. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a dazzling display of traditional Chinese design and architecture. Then visit a traditional Chinese Medicine Centre, learning about this ancient practice used for generations. Next, head back to the hotel and relax or explore at your leisure. Why not head on a tour of the Summer Palace, followed by a delicious Beijing-style dinner?
The following day craft your own Beijing adventure. Feeling adventurous? Join an optional excursion to the UNESCO Temple of Heaven, and delve into the Hutong district, a labyrinthine network of traditional alleyways brimming with local charm.
Days 6-8: Beijing - X'ian
Travel in speed and style on day 6 as you take the bullet train to X'ian, before visiting the visit the South Gate Old City Wall, part of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. Later in the evening, enjoy an authentic taste of Chinese cuisine with a dumpling banquet for dinner.
There's another historic wonder in store on day 7, as you'll visit the 8,000 sculpted terracotta soldiers that were buried alongside Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, at the Terracotta Warriors Museum. Intricate and unique, each figure is a work of art. Step further back in time as you try your hand at the art of Chinese calligraphy at the Yanyuan Art Museum, before some retail therapy in the bustling Muslim Quarter. Unwind at the hotel in the evening, or delight yourself with the sounds and colours of an optional Tang Dynasty Show, packed with vibrant music and dance.
You'll have more time to explore X'ian at your own speed on day 8, where you can dip into the fantastic local food scene at a street food market, or take an optional excursion to Mt. Hushan via cable car, one of China’s Five Sacred Taoist Mountains, with a hiking trail that spans 15 kilometres.
Day 9: Xi’an - Guilin - Yangshuo
After so much history, it's time to experience China's diverse natural beauty today, with a flight to Guilin, famed for its karsts, or towering limestone hills. A scenic boat cruise on the Li River takes you on a picturesque journey to Yangshuo, where you'll see Moon Hill and the Big Banyan Tree, a momentous tree that has withstood the toughest conditions to stay standing after 1,500 years. In the evening, you can enjoy an optional Liusanjie Impression Show, a charming display of light interacting with the natural scenery.
Days 10-11: Guilin
Discover more of Guilin's unique nature over the next couple of days, starting with another included excursion. Today you'll be visiting the aptly named Elephant Trunk Hill, a distinctive natural formation that curves into the river. With the following day at your leisure, it's worth exploring the landscape and serene lakes with a boat ride, or you can take an optional excursion to the impressive Longji Fields - rice terraces that have been innovatively built into the hillside itself.
Days 12-15: Guilin - Shanghai
The last leg of this epic tour brings you to one of China's brightest and busiest cities, the bustling financial hub of Shanghai. After a domestic flight to the city and a hotel transfer, you can take time to refresh yourself before you head out to explore the area with an included walking tour of Nanjing Road and the Bund. Later in the evening, the optional Huangpu River cruise is an incredible way to check out Shanghai's sparkling skyline.
The next day is packed with a full-day exploration of Shanghai, with included visits to the captivating Yu Garden and an authentic Silk Factory, along with the Shanghai Museum, where you can learn more about the city's past. If you want to discover even more, take an optional full-day excursion on day 14, starting with an unbelievably speedy ride on a Meglev Bullet train, before going to the Observation Deck on the 88th Floor of Jinmao Tower, and more.
With time to yourself on day 15, be sure to explore the many bustling shopping centres for souvenirs and check out the fragrant street markets for mouthwatering cuisine. For more unforgettable sights, you can also take an optional excursion to Suzhou, known as the ‘Venice of the East’, and home to the Lingering Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Day 16: Shanghai - UK
After breakfast, it's time to head to the airport for your flight home.
