Highlights of Bangkok tour (incl. lunch)
Visit two of Bangkok's top attractions: The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, a giant Buddha covered in gold leaf, and the Grand Palace, truly a must-see for every visitor. Located near the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace is the perfect example of an ancient Siamese court, within which you'll find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). Lunch will be served at a Thai restaurant, after which you'll take a cruise down the Chao Phraya River and through the klongs (canals) of Thonburi. You'll have the opportunity to observe and photograph the tranquil family homes and temples along the waterways, which have afforded the city its nickname as the Venice of the East. You will also visit one of Bangkok's most-photographed attractions, Wat Arun: this majestic shrine is home to a 76-metre-high pagoda, and is decorated with glazed ceramic pieces that reflect the rising sun.
Floating Market, Wat Bang Kung & Train Market tour
To understand how Bangkok used to be, drive about 100 kilometres outside of the city to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and experience its many colours, flavours, and exotic scents. Begin with a long-tail narrow boat ride past riverside villages and orchards, before entering the bustling market. You'll visit the tiny and unique temple of Wat Bang Kung, whose entrance is enclosed by large tree roots, before heading on to the Railway Market in Samut Songkhram; its stalls are literally placed on the railroad tracks, and when a train approaches, vendors jostle to get their wares off the rails.
The Great Circuit tour - Away from the Crowds
Start the day with a transfer to Banteay Srei, the Citadel of the Women, and the only major temple not built by a monarch. Originally built in the 10th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, this red sandstone temple is one of Angkor's most significant structures, as its walls are adorned with intricate carvings that are remarkably well preserved. Along the way, stop at the Hindu temple of Banteay Samre, a structure often referred to as the mini Angkor Wat.
In the afternoon, continue your exploration with a short transfer to the Roluos Temple Group. The ruins of Roluos are among the earliest temples built during the Khmer Empire, and comprise a collection of four Angkor-era monuments that are now the last remains of the ancient city of Hariharalaya. Learn about the development of these magnificent temples from the beginnings of the Khmer Empire, and explore them at your leisure - their more remote location provides a nice escape from the crowds.
