In an area that the locals like to call ‘Little Canada’, it’s no surprise that the breathtaking scenery is the biggest draw. The Val di Non is known for its numerous lakes - why not take one or two in on a scenic alpine walk? The majestic Brenta Dolomites are also great for intrepid hikers, just 45 minutes south-west in the car. On your drive, stop by the Lago di Santa Giustina; dotted around this large and beautiful lake, you’ll find several points of historical interest, including the Castello di Cles, the Museo Retico archaeological museum, and the Santa Giustina Hermitage, an ancient dwelling built into a natural cave on the eastern wall of the Santa Giustina canyon.
For some mountain bliss, head north to Merano, home of the famous thermal baths. 25 indoor and outdoor pools await, set amidst green gardens and surrounded by soaring peaks. Stick around to explore the charming town, which once hosted such notable guests as Franz Kafka and Austria’s Empress Sissi. Top things to do include wandering the historic city centre, exploring the Duomo (one of the oldest Gothic buildings in South Tyrol) and visiting the Trauttmansdorff Gardens and castle.
