Rethimno
The hotel is just outside the town of Rethymnon, which is a blend of old-world charm and lively Cretan life. Be sure to visit the landmark Venetian Fortress that sits above the town, before taking a stroll along the picturesque harbour. Just 20 kilometres away, hidden away among the oaks and pines, is the Arkadi monastery, while Sfendoni Cave, with its impressive formations, makes for a great day trip.
For something completely different, visit the traditional Agreco farm (booking required), located four kilometres away, where you can bake bread, make cheese, press grapes and crush wheat in an antique mill.
