Wenen
With the tranquil waters of the Old Danube lake to one side and the Danube Island to the other, Vienna’s Kaisermühlen neighbourhood is a relaxing oasis at the heart of the city. Your immediate surroundings are often referred to as ‘UNO City’ after the nearby United Nations Headquarters, and a photo stop at the Scholars Pavilion of the Vienna International Centre is a great place to start. After that, hop on the U1 metro line straight to Stephansplatz, the beating heart of Vienna’s Old Town and the home of the city’s landmark Stephansdom Cathedral. From here, you can easily tick off historic hotspots like the Hofburg Palace and Vienna State Opera - all while wandering enchanting streets lined with fairytale period architecture, magnificent churches, and inviting locales perfect for sampling Vienna’s café scene.
Art lovers will be spoilt for choice between the Albertina and Kunsthistorisches museums and the lavish Belvedere Palace, while history buffs can head a little further out to explore the Rococo rooms of Schönbrunn Palace. When all that’s done and you’ve refuelled generously on Sachertorte, Kaiserschmarrn and a classic Wiener schnitzel, circle back towards home to plan tomorrow’s adventures - city-slicking and high-end shopping, or perhaps a scenic Danube cruise or a day out in the Vienna Woods.
