Escape to the shores of Lake Windermere for a bucolic break at a recently renovated hotel full of charm and character, including breakfast and an optional dinner

  • Lakeside idylls: Welcome to The Ro Hotel Windermere, a new kind of hotel in the peaceful surrounds of Lake Windermere. Located on a hilltop and behind its 19th-century façade, the hotel has been wonderfully refurbished and brought up-to-date, providing unexpected interiors without ever compromising on comfort.

  • Local, honest dishes: The emphasis here is on good, honest food all day long. Whether you’re hankering after a lazy breakfast with a newspaper or a hearty lunch with an afternoon tipple, the Lacu Restaurant has you covered. The menu changes seasonally, but the emphasis is always on the best of British produce. Elsewhere, there’s a cosy bar which is a hit with locals and tourists alike, so expect a warm atmosphere.

  • Stylish guest rooms: All 87 guest rooms have been wonderfully refurbished to a high, contemporary standard. Interiors are warm and welcoming, and rooms are filled with an array of amenities that make you feel at home - these include a flatscreen smart TV, Wi-Fi, a plush king-size bed, and a sleek en-suite with shower and toiletries.

How to get there

Ro Windermere is situated in the village of Bowness-on-Windermere, right on the lake’s edge. It’s around 80 miles from Manchester, and 120 miles from Sheffield. If you’re coming from the South, then follow the M6 northbound through Preston, or the M1 up to Leeds and then the A650/A629 towards the Lake District.

Entry requirements

The passport, visa and health requirements at the time of booking can be viewed on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for UK citizens, and on the Department of Foreign Affairs website for IE citizens. It is your responsibility to ensure that you and all members of your party are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents, and in compliance with any other immigration/entry requirements before you travel, including whether your passport must be machine readable or which visas/waivers may be required for entry, such as ESTA for USA travel and/or ETIAS for EU travel. Please also be sure to check the validity of your passport and allow up to 10 weeks for passport renewals.

Bowness-on-Windermere

The Lake District never loses its capacity to enchant, so you can expect lashings of fabulousness and finery at this beautiful bolthole half a mile from the shores of Lake Windermere - England’s largest watery wonder that stretches for over 10 miles between Ambleside and Newby Bridge. The Ro Hotel Windermere is perched in the middle of Bowness-on-Windermere, a former fishing village that’s now the best (and busiest) place to catch a boat for a trip around the lake.

Historic sites of interest include the Neolithic Stone Circle at Castlerigg, the Bronze Age settlement at Threlkeld and the Roman fort at Hardknott Pass which makes for one of England's most spectacular drives. Know that you’re following in the footsteps of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, who both spent time in the area (in fact, you’re only a two-minute walk from the delightful World of Beatrix Potter).
