Hamburg
Somewhat notorious for its nightlife, the Reeperbahn district is a happening hotspot that truly comes alive when the sun sets. Up and down this neon-lit entertainment mile you’ll find funky music bars, famous nightclubs and cheeky cabaret shows, as well as a large number of the city’s 60-odd theatres. If none of that takes your fancy, head to the main square of Spielbudenplatz - it regularly fills with people and excitement for events like the weekly St Pauli Night Market, but offers amusements such as the Panoptikum wax museum all day.
The wider city of Hamburg has much to offer as well. You could spend hours marvelling in Miniatur Wunderland, the jaw-dropping miniature world that includes scenes from Venice to Rio de Janeiro and boasts the title of longest model railway system - with over 15 kilometres of track! The imposing city hall is also sure to impress with its palatial grandeur; book a guided tour if you’d like to see the majestic vaulted arches and 19th-century décor of the interior. Over the festive season, the city hall also provides the backdrop to Hamburg’s Historic Christmas Market. Stop by between November 27 and December 23 to sample some local sweet treats like Nuremberg gingerbread and pick up a few handcrafted trinkets for the perfect unique gift.
