Province of Siena
San Gimignano’s 14 famous towers once numbered 72 – it was a way for well-heeled residents to flaunt their wealth over their neighbours: the higher the tower, the higher the status. Nowadays the towers are a tourist attraction and every year visitors flock to admire these and the winding medieval streets, the red-tiled Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Cisterna and the town’s many rustic restaurants. No trip to San Gimignano is complete without a generous scoop of gelato from Gelateria Dondoli, no matter the time of year.
The hills around San Gimignano are peppered with vineyards, scenic viewpoints and olive oil producers, so travelling by car opens up a plethora of doors. The town is virtually midway between Florence and Siena for further exploration, while the hill towns of Chianti and the Val d’Orcia offer adventures aplenty.
