Exeter

Straddling the river Exe in the idyllic county of Devon, Exeter, known as the ‘Jewel of the West’, is a city wreathed in history. Despite many years of investment to regenerate the centre, it’s wonderfully characterful and is dominated by the stunning cathedral. The city walls enclose a network of narrow streets lined with charming restaurants and coffee shops, independent boutiques and recognisable high street names. Equally lovely to explore is the nearby Exeter Quay area, about 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel, where the former warehouses have been given a new lease of life as bars, galleries and antiques stores, all connected by paths and cycleways making exploring a breeze. Crossing the river is no drama – there are several bridges along the Exe, either for cars or pedestrians – or you can hop aboard the hand-pulled Butts Ferry for a taste of nostalgia.
