A polished nautical-inspired hotel with award-winning dining on Harwich’s historic harbour - includes breakfast and optional dinner credit

  • Grand Dame: This harbourfront hotel has arguably the best setting in the town of Harwich, with a magnificent view across the water. The hotel occupies an elegant building from 1860 and the pub next door, both thoroughly modernised after an extensive renovation: comfortable bedrooms have stylish linens and nautical touches, the bar and restaurant have been given a fabulous facelift, and there’s an outside terrace for watching the ships come in when the sun’s shining.

  • Award-winning dining: The hotel’s Pier Restaurant has been awarded two AA rosettes and is one of the area’s best eateries, with a focus, as you’d imagine, on seafood. Local oysters, mussels, Harwich lobster and crab accompany hearty meat dishes - like succulent sirloin steaks - and delectable veggie options on a menu to suit all palates. The desserts are also worth saving room for. The floor-to-ceiling windows on the first floor overlook the magnificent harbour.

  • Try a tipple: The hotel’s revamped NAVYÄRD bar gives off cool East London vibes, with Scandi-style influences and a terrace overlooking the working harbour. As well as small plates (perfect for sharing), the bar has a lengthy list of Prosecco-based cocktails, cask ales, craft beers and an impressive gin library of more than 150 different gins. It’s popular with locals as well as visitors, giving it a very firm Harwich stamp of approval.

How to get there
The Pier Hotel is perched on the tip of the harbour in Harwich, which is easily reached by road and rail. The town’s train station is less than half a mile from the hotel, which is in a great position for taking ferries over to mainland Europe – the ferry terminal is about two and a half miles away. The hotel has parking, too, but Harwich is compact and fantastically walkable.

Entry requirements

The passport, visa and health requirements at the time of booking can be viewed on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for UK citizens, and on the Department of Foreign Affairs website for IE citizens. It is your responsibility to ensure that you and all members of your party are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents, and in compliance with any other immigration/entry requirements before you travel, including whether your passport must be machine readable or which visas/waivers may be required for entry, such as ESTA for USA travel and/or ETIAS for EU travel. Please also be sure to check the validity of your passport and allow up to 10 weeks for passport renewals.

Harwich
The charming coastal town of Harwich is small but mighty: it’s home to the UK’s second-busiest passenger ferry port, has an enormous harbour created by a storm surge in the 1100s, and is perhaps best known for its part in the Mayflower’s history. From here, the sailing ship left for the New World and after 10 weeks, delivered the Pilgrims to the ‘promised land’: the United States of America.

You can explore Harwich’s maritime history on the Maritime Heritage Trail, leaving from the Ha’Penny Visitor Centre to explore the Low Lighthouse Maritime Museum and Lifeboat Museum, the Treadwell Crane - still standing despite being more than 350 years old - and the beautiful Electric Palace Cinema. Use the foot ferries to nip back and forth across the harbour or take a seal-watching excursion, or just sit and enjoy the best fish and chips of your life at one of the town’s seafood restaurants; there are plenty to choose from.
