Discover Guatemala’s history, culture and stunning natural beauty on an epic tour with flights, fabulous excursions and an optional Belize beach stay
Day 1: UK/Ireland - Antigua, Guatemala
Welcome to Guatemala! Touch down and transfer to vibrant Antigua, a UNESCO-listed city full of colourful colonial architecture, once the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. Get a good night’s sleep, because tomorrow your adventure truly begins!
Day 2-3: Antigua, Guatemala
Kick off your trip with a half-day city walking tour of charming Antigua. In 1773, an earthquake destroyed much of the beautiful city and the capital was moved to Guatemala City; you’ll visit highlights from its heyday, including the vibrant La Merced Monastery, Plaza de Armas and the majestic cathedral. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure, seeking out hidden gems, or opt to take part in a Guatemalan cooking class where you’ll visit the bustling market to source ingredients before returning to the kitchen to whip up your own four-course dinner (wine, soft drinks and tuk-tuk transfers included).
The next day is a free day for you to continue exploring the city - shop for locally-made artisan crafts, sip fragrant coffee on the terrace of a charming café, or pay a visit to the chocolate museum to learn how the tasty treat goes from bean to bar. You could also opt to enjoy a visit to La Azotea - a farm that’s been producing coffee for over 150 years - to learn all about the production process, followed by a stop at Hobbitenango, a Tolkienesque fantasy landscape with spectacular views. Complete your evening with an optional dinner at Don Rodrigo Antigua’s traditional restaurant-inn, accompanied by a lively concert of marimba music (tuk-tuk transfers included).
(Meals: breakfast)
Day 4-5: Chichicastenango - Lake Atitlán - Panajachel
A change of scenery now as you head for Chichicastenango in the Central Guatemalan Highlands. This colourful town is home to a world-famous market, where you’ll spend two hours souvenir shopping amidst stall after stall of locally-made, colourful handicrafts - be sure to leave plenty of room in your suitcase for all your purchases! You’ll also visit the Church of Santo Tomas, which blends Mayan ruins with 16th-century architecture. Next, you’ll transfer to Lake Atitlán, whose clear waters are surrounded by the peaks of three volcanoes. Soak up the dramatic scenery, then take a panoramic tour of Panajachel, a lakeside town with a pretty Old Town and market stalls to wander.
On day 5, you’re at leisure in Panajachel, so keep exploring! You could visit a traditional Mayan sauna, called a temescal, or go kayaking on the lake to enjoy magnificent views of the volcanic landscape. You also have the option of a boat tour of three villages dotted around the lake: San Juan, San Pedro and San Pablo de la Laguna. On the tour, you’ll visit a chocolate cooperative to see the sweet treat in production, as well as a textile cooperative - where you’ll learn about the dyeing process - and a local artisan project working with medicinal plants.
(Meals: breakfast)
Day 6: Panajachel - Guatemala City
Wake up slowly and spend the morning how you like - soak up some final views across the lake or head out on another optional excursion to the Atitlán Nature Reserve, taking you to an enchanting butterfly farm before you whizz along two zip line circuits past breathtaking views of the forest, waterfalls and volcanoes. In the afternoon, transfer back to Guatemala City and settle in at your hotel before hitting the streets in search of tasty street food or a place to sip an evening drink.
(Meals: breakfast)
Day 7-8: Flores - Tikal
Today you’re hopping on an early-morning flight to Flores, your next base on this epic adventure. You’ll transfer to Tikal, an ancient Mayan city nestled amidst lush rainforest. The city flourished between 200 and 900 AD, producing incredible pyramids and temples that are now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Enjoy a guided tour of all the mesmerising sights, including the Temple of the Great Jaguar and Mundo Perdido, the site’s largest ceremonial complex from the Preclassic period. You’ll have a tasty lunch before heading back to Flores for the night.
On day 8 you have time to explore the charming cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of Flores. Other local activities include scenic boat tours on Lake Petén Itzá or a visit to ARCAS Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association to learn about local wildlife rehabilitation efforts. If yesterday’s Mayan adventure left you hungry for more, you can also join an optional tour to Yaxhá, another key archaeological site that’s home to several important ceremonial structures including Guatemala’s only other pair of twin pyramids besides the set at Tikal (lunch included).
(Meals: breakfast)
Day 9-12: Flores, Guatemala - San Pedro, Belize
If you’ve opted for the shorter trip, you’ll have much of your final full day to squeeze in some last-minute explorations in Flores before returning to Guatemala City on the evening flight. After breakfast the next morning, it’s time to bid Guatemala goodbye and head for home - it’s been an incredible journey!
Staying on for some beach bliss? You’ll set out for Melchor de Mencos and cross into Belize, before transferring to the port to catch the ferry to San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye. Settle in at your hotel before heading out to discover one of Central America's most beautiful spots.
Over the next few days you can kick back and enjoy the island’s idyllic beaches; with Caribbean-blue waters and palm-fringed sands, this really is ‘La Isla Bonita’. Feast on fresh and flavourful seafood, explore picturesque fishing villages or strap on your snorkel and flippers to discover the magical world beneath the waves, all before returning to your hotel each night to relax and unwind. On your final day, you’ll catch the ferry back to the mainland before a short transfer to Belize International Airport - your amazing adventure may be over, but we’re sure you’ll be dreaming of San Pedro for many nights to come!
