Dresden
On the banks of the River Elbe, Dresden’s Old Town (Altstadt) is full of stunning Baroque architecture, much of which was painstakingly restored after the city was largely destroyed during World War Two. Start your journey into the past at the Frauenkirche, a beautifully-restored Baroque church; admire the ornate, pastel interiors and spectacular altarpiece before making the climb up the dome to gain panoramic views over the old town. Head down to wander the fabulous Zwinger palace complex and gardens, and stop into one or all of the museums onsite - the extensive Porcelain Collection and the Old Masters Picture Gallery shouldn’t be missed. As the sun sets, wander along the peaceful banks of the river and be sure to snap a dreamy shot from Brühl’s Terrace, nicknamed “The Balcony of Europe”.
