Rugged coastal charm meets Scandi-chic boutique on the isle of Sylt - includes breakfast, wellness access and a host of thoughtful perks

  • Country-chic charm in secluded Sylt: Sitting pretty in the most picturesque village on Sylt Island is Hotel Aarnhoog, a stunning boutique that embodies European living and countryside charm. With only 11 beautifully designed rooms, the feeling here is intimate, as is fitting in this secluded part of the world.

  • Stellar dining: A gourmet breakfast awaits at the café lounge, an elegant space with interiors reminiscent of a Lake District property. For an upmarket dinner, five-star sister property Hotel Fährhaus has several chic dining and drinking spots for you to while away an evening.

  • Nature inside and out: It’s easy to lose track of time admiring the property’s gorgeous gardens, with its gnarled trees and blooming hydrangeas. Take your morning coffee outside, lie back on a shaded lounger in the afternoon, or sip wine on a wicker chair come evening. Take your serenity to the next level with a visit to the spa, a light-filled sanctuary with a generous indoor pool, sauna and steam room. Massages are also available to book.

How to get there

Hotel Aarnhoog is a handy five kilometres away from Sylt Airport. Airport transfers are available from the hotel, and require booking in advance. You can fly into Sylt from airports across Germany. If you can fly into Sylt, we recommend you do so; otherwise, you could hire a car and drive over to the beautifully rural islet. From Hamburg, it's around a three-and-a-half hour drive. The hotel is 200 metres from Keitum train station; from Hamburg Central Station, the train takes between three and four hours.

Sylt

Hotel Aarnhoog is located on Sylt - the northernmost island of Germany - directly on the coast of the Wadden Sea. The hotel sits in the picturesque village of Keitum, known for its traditional Uthland-Frisian houses, many over 200 years old. You'll also find peaceful, tree-lined avenues, a pretty Romanesque church, and a handful of museums, teahouses and craft galleries, all perfect for whiling away an afternoon. The Wadden Sea itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its shifting tides, sands and mud flats containing a delicate and diverse ecosystem that includes the grey seal and the harbour porpoise.

This location is a must in both summer and winter: between long hikes on the plains, bike rides through unspoiled nature and thrilling boat trips to the natural habitats of pinnipeds, your favourite pastime will be just to explore the scenic landscapes and old-world charm that characterise this overlooked island of Germany.
