  • Fun on The Test: Whether you’re in Hampshire to fish the famous rivers of the Test and the Itchen, to stomp your wellies all over the New Forest or to explore the county’s historic towns and villages, The Duke on the Test is a great spot to rest your head, with 12 stylish bedrooms decked out in country-themed wallpaper and fabrics.

  • Posh pub grub: Locals and visitors alike flock to The Duke for its delicious food, which is sourced from around the Test Valley. Outside there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the leafy area, with an accessible garden for drinking, dining and soaking up the sun.

How to get there
If you’re driving, Romsey is close to the M3 and M27 motorways, if you’re coming from the east, and the A36 if you’re coming from the west. If you’re planning to take public transport, Romsey’s train station is about a mile and a half from the hotel, though the hotel is on a busy road so a taxi is recommended over walking. Ask about the pub’s taxi service before you arrive.

Good to know
Please note that the hotel's restaurant serves food from 12 - 2.30pm and 5.30 - 8.30pm, Monday to Saturday and from 12 - 4.30pm on Sunday. Breakfast is served from 7 - 9.30am, Monday to Friday and from 8 - 10am on Saturday and Sunday.

Hampshire

You’d be forgiven for thinking that this corner of Hampshire is all about hunting, shooting and fishing, such is the concentration of Schöffel gilets and Le Chameau wellies that prop up the pub bars in the local area. There are certainly plenty of country pursuits to enjoy here, from fishing the famous chalk streams to exploring the New Forest on foot, by bike or on horseback - all of which will leave you pink cheeked and feeling thoroughly full of fresh, clean air.

But there’s more to the area too, if you enjoy exploring historical sites. Romsey dates back to the Middle Ages and is packed with charm around every corner of its mediaeval alleys. Stroll down the busy market streets to the imposing Norman Abbey or learn more about the town’s past in the Heritage Centre, featuring period gardens, a Tudor cottage, Victorian gun shop and more.
