City-to-nature Malaysia trip with orangutan experience in Borneo

Day 1: UK - Kuala Lumpur

Kick off your Malaysian adventure with an overnight flight to Kuala Lumpur. Touch down and transfer to your hotel, then the rest of the day is yours to settle in, rest up or start exploring.

Day 2 or 2-3: Kuala Lumpur

After breakfast, head out to discover the diverse Malaysian capital. Hit all the top sights, including Chinatown, Independence Square, Little India and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. A unique blend of historic and modern makes this cultural melting pot a never-ending surprise, where Hindu and Taoist temples sit alongside soaring skyscrapers and bustling malls.

If you opt to stay longer, spend your next full day uncovering even more of the city. Walk above the canopies at KLCC Eco Park or catch a taxi out to nearby Batu Caves, a famous Hindu temple complex hidden inside a limestone cave at the top of a colourful staircase. Hit the street markets in the evening to sample local delicacies, or grab a drink at a sky bar for spectacular views of the magical skyline.

Day 3 or 4: Kuala Lumpur - Sandakan, Borneo

This morning it’s an early start for your onward flight to Sandakan, a coastal Borneo city in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Transfer to a hotel nestled in the tropical rainforest, where you can lounge around, enjoying the facilities and relaxing. Get a good night’s sleep, because tomorrow you're setting out on the wildlife experience of a lifetime.

Day 4 or 5 to Day 6 or 7: Sandakan (Sepilok)

This morning you’ll head to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, beginning the experience with an informative video about the challenges facing orangutans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the centre. After that, you’ll get to witness the feeding of the orangutans and visit the nursery area for young orangutans. Continue to the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the conservation of the world’s smallest bear.

After lunch, you’ll cruise along Sabah's longest river towards your rainforest lodge, your home for the next few nights. During the two and a half-hour journey, look out for birds and other wildlife, and take an afternoon river cruise for even more opportunities to spot the colourful local fauna.

The next day, take a 6am river cruise up the Kinabatangan River - one of Borneo’s most important waterways - to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, where you can spot the early-morning wildlife. After breakfast, you’ll take an informative tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist. Enjoy lunch, then join the in-house Orangutan Talk, before heading out on the river again in the afternoon. The next morning, head out early again to cruise along the Menanggol River in search of new animals to add to your camera roll. In the late afternoon, you’ll make the journey towards Gomantong Cave. Travel the last 15-minutes on foot through the rainforest - spotting all kinds of wildlife along the way - and arrive at the cave, where you’ll get to witness the exodus of over two million bats and raptors.

Day 7 or 8 to Day 9, 11 or 14: Sandakan (Sepilok) to Kota Kinabalu

Say goodbye to the rainforest this morning and return to Sandakan by boat. Transfer to the airport for your short flight onwards to the coastal city of Kota Kinabalu.
