Perfectly Portuguese: The third outpost of AlmaLusa Hotels is located in a historic, primrose-hued building in the fashionable Alfama district, overlooking the wide, shimmering expanse of the Tagus River. The building dates back to the 12th century and is beautifully presented, with a café spilling out onto the square below. Murals adorn bedroom walls, paints are earth-toned, exposed stonework shows the age of the building.

Old and new: The heritage building is a cool and relaxed escape from modern life, though that’s not to say there aren’t contemporary touches to enhance your stay. You’ll be given a 4G smartphone to use, equipped with the AlmaLusa app which features excellent walking tours, tips and activities to do while you’re there. Explore the cuisine: Charming Delfina café is a lovely sunny spot decked out in vintage maps and serves homemade croissants for breakfast, local cheeses and breads, freshly pressed fruit juice and eggs cooked just how you like. The perfect afternoon pick-me-up is the firm but perfectly wobbly pastel de nata, while evenings can be started (or ended) with delicious cocktails like a white port concoction or sour cherry brandy. How to get there
Lisbon’s Humbergo Delgado Airport is a 20-minute taxi ride from AlmaLusa Alfama. Alternatively, you can take the city’s cheap and efficient metro system. The nearest station, Santa Apolonia, is 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel; it offers train service and the metro – take the blue line to Sao Sebastiao and change to the red line for the airport.
Entry requirements

Lissabon
Vibrant Lisbon undulates over a series of hills, rippling down to the mouth of the river Tagus in the south and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The setting of the AlmaLusa Alfama is in a great spot for exploring the city centre and the coast, walkable to all the main districts, known as here barrios: ancient Alfama, fashionable Barrio Alto, the traditional Moorish Quarter, elegant Baixa and bustling Chiado, the latter with its famous café culture. There’s a huge amount to see on foot, strolling up and down narrow, azulejos-tiled streets and grand boulevards in search of Fado bars, ceramics shops and the city’s best pastel de nata (egg custard tarts). For adventures further afield, you can rattle around the hills on the tram or jump on the metro.
