Day 1 & 2: Milan
Your Italian getaway will begin the moment you arrive at your departure airport. After touching down, head straight to your hotel to check in. Then, get ready to explore one of the world’s most fashionable cities and the epitome of Italian elegance: Milan.
Plan for two nights at this first stop, with an espresso or gelato as your constant companion. Post-caffeine and sugar fix, head straight to Milan’s Duomo - a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Opt to either admire this iconic landmark from the outside, or ascend to its spired roof for sensational city views. Then, join the city’s stylish ranks with a luxurious trip to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a stunning shopping arcade that houses all the most sought-after brands beneath a spectacular vaulted-glass dome.
Next, why not visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, awaits? It's recommended to book tickets in advance, but the Pinacoteca di Brera houses an impressive art collection should you miss the da Vinci boat. Later, enjoy a captivating evening performance at the Teatro alla Scala, the city’s regal opera house, where you can laugh and cry amid operatic greats. Wanting more? Be sure to check out the Navigli district, a charming neighbourhood with picturesque canals, trendy bars, and art galleries that’s sure to delight.
With the nine-day trip, you’ll stay three nights in Milan.
Day 3 & 4: Florence
Say goodbye to Milan, and embark on the first train journey of your trip. After two hours or so, you’ll arrive in enchanting Florence. Known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is brimming with history, architecture, and culture - it's no wonder it was named one of the most beautiful cities in the world by Forbes Magazine.
Spend your first day exploring all of the must-see sights. Climb the Duomo to have your breath taken away by gorgeous vistas (as well as the church’s 463 steps). Browse the mesmerising jewellery shops on the iconic Ponte Vecchio - Europe’s oldest bridge - and don’t forget to stop for a delicious local bite whilst you’re at it. Visit Florence’s most famous gallery, Uffizi, to come face to face with world-class masterpieces, such as Boticelli’s The Birth of Venus. Stop by the stunning Boboli Gardens for some peaceful reflection away from the bustle of the city, and don’t miss a sunset trip to Piazzale Michelangelo to witness the whole of Florence illuminated in golden grandeur. Of course, a trip to Florence is not complete without visiting Galleria dell’Accademia: home of Michelangelo’s David. Make sure you get there early to beat the queues, and have your selfie stick ready to capture a photo of yourself with the world’s most famous marble man.
On day four, you’ll embark on a sun-drenched day trip to the UNESCO-recognised Cinque Terre: a stunning stretch of unspoilt coast in the Italian Riviera. Directly translating to ‘Five Lands’, Cinque Terre consists of five picture-perfect villages that enchant all who visit. You’ll spend your day strolling from village to village, admiring pastel-coloured houses, picturesque valleys, rugged mountains, and unbeatable sea views. Then, you’ll return to Florence, ready for your onward travel the following day.
On the nine-day trip, you’ll stay three nights in Florence, with the Cinque Terre excursion being on the fifth day.
Day 5 & 6: Rome
Say ciao to Rome! On day five, you’ll take a train to Italy’s Eternal City. An open-air museum, Rome is jam-packed with bucket-list sights; it’s the perfect place to end your trip.
Your first stop will probably be Rome’s trademark: the famous Colosseum. Afterwards, you can visit The Roman Forum - the oldest part of Rome. Be sure to climb up to the Farnesian gardens on the Palatine Hill, because from there you have a great view of the city. Next, head to Piazza Navona. With its three fountains and its baroque ambience, this square is Rome as you imagine it. From here, the Pantheon is only a few minutes' walk away. This church was originally created as a temple and is the best preserved ancient building in the world.
Next on the list should undoubtedly be the Trevi Fountain, where throwing a single penny may just make all your wishes come true. Afterwards, channel your inner Audrey with a visit to the Spanish Steps, one of the most famous outdoor stairs in the world, and a popular meeting place for both tourists and locals alike. Be sure to visit St. Peter's Basilica, probably the most important church in the world, and the Sistine Chapel, where you can admire the impressive murals.
If you fancy a little browsing, you can visit Campo de 'Fiori, one of Rome's most popular markets (open every day except Sunday). And if you need a little break, settle down in one of the picturesque squares to ask the question of all questions: pizza or pasta?
On the nine-day trip, you’ll spend three nights in Rome.
Day 7: Fly back to the UK
After six dreamy days filled with train hopping, gelato tasting, sun-kissed piazzas, and pasta feasts, your very own Italian renaissance has come to a close. Make your way to your departure airport, with your dolce vita memories in tow, and catch your flight back to the UK.
