Embark on a scenic train ride through Germany's picturesque cities, starting in either Baden-Baden or Stuttgart, with train travel, flights, and more
Please note that your itinerary starting point will vary depending on your departure airport. The starting points are Baden-Baden or Stuttgart.
Day 1: UK to Baden-Baden or Stuttgart
The first leg of your train-hopping expedition will see you touching down in either Baden-Baden or Stuttgart. For Baden-Baden beginners, look forward to a 2000-year-old spa town home to thermal waters that have been a magnet for fashionable Europeans since the 19th century. Nestled amid the fairytale landscape of the Black Forest, this UNESCO-listed town boasts plenty of draws besides its healing waters, from lush parks and manicured gardens to breathtaking neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, an elegant promenade, and a lavish turn-of-the-century concert hall that is the country’s largest.
For those beginning their journey in Stuttgart, there's only one word you need to know: cars. Known as Germany’s car capital, Stuttgart is the home of both Mercedes-Benz and Porche, so a visit to both of the companies' fantastic museums should be at the top of your to-do list. Elsewhere, this picturesque town boasts plenty of highlights besides its automotive heritage, from vineyards and flourishing parks to the renowned Staatsgalerie Stuttgart art museum, a world-class theatre, and a lush botanical garden that’s one of Europe’s largest. Soak up the town’s charming blend of history, culture, and wine, before returning to your plush hotel to rest up for tomorrow’s journey.
With the six-night itinerary, you’ll stay two nights in either Baden-Baden or Stuttgart.
Day 2: Baden-Baden or Stuttgart to Mainz
Today your scenic train adventure begins. Hop aboard at either Baden-Baden or Stuttgart bound for the bustling city of Mainz, known for being Germany’s wine capital. Take in sweeping views of the Black Forest as you glide northwards following the magnificent Rhine River, whose sparkling waters and lush green banks frame the capital of Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate region.
Brimming with historical landmarks and picture-perfect spots, Mainz is well worth exploring - be sure to take a stroll through the medieval Old Town, and stop by highlights like the Gutenberg Museum and imposing red cathedral. Later, dip into a cosy wine tavern, where the region’s best vino awaits.
Day 3: Mainz to Koblenz
Return to your train ready to cruise up the Rhine towards Koblenz, a historic city that dates back to the ninth century BC. Drift between charming squares and dreamy period buildings in the Altstadt (Old Town), before visiting the medieval Marksburg Castle for atmospheric interiors and spectacular views out over the river and valley. Elsewhere, take a ride on the city’s iconic cable car to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and marvel at the glistening turrets of the romantic Stolzenfels Castle.
If you're not sure where to start in this spectacular city, embark on an optional sightseeing cruise down the Rhine to take in the city's fairytale castles and Old Town from the water, marvelling at top sights such as Lahneck Castle, Deutsches Eck, and more - complete with an onboard commentary from an experienced guide.
Day 4: Koblenz to Cologne
Set off on your last panoramic train journey towards Cologne - your final destination. A sizzling metropolis and kaleidoscope of breathtaking scenery, Cologne is home to a wealth of millennia-old history and trendy cosmopolitan hotspots. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world-famous Cologne Cathedral presides over the city with its soaring twin spires, while down below you’ll find everything from eclectic eateries and high-end shops to centuries-old landmarks, renowned artworks - think Picasso and Warhol - a Chocolate Museum, and a beautiful botanical garden.
With the six-night itinerary, you’ll stay two nights in Cologne.
Day 5: Cologne to UK
On day five, the time has come to say goodbye to your railway adventure, and make your way to your departure airport, with plenty of unforgettable memories in tow.
