Bamberg
The history of Bamberg dates back to the 9th century. Unsurprisingly then, the Franconian city at the mouth of the Regnitz has accumulated an impressive array of art, culture and architecture throughout the ages - above all the old town, which was crowned an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Set around the imposing Bamberg Cathedral, it inspires with its romantic romantic alleys which lead you past about 2,400 original half-timbered houses.
Monasteries, churches and museums gather here to form a cornucopia of inspiration, but a special highlight is the inimitable ambience of the Old Town Hall, which is enthroned on an island in the Regnitz River.
