The perfect countryside escape: Nestled within a charming village, Marquis Suffolk is a historic inn with 17th-century origins that has been transformed into a modern-day marvel. With its idyllic setting immersed in the beautiful scenery of South Suffolk, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy rural England’s country charms, with long walks and days out bookended by luxurious pampering in the spa, and delicious meals in the hotel’s top-notch restaurant.
-
Views that change with the seasons: The best views of the countryside unfurl from the doorstep and can be enjoyed from the panoramic windows within The Restaurant, framing beautiful scenes over the Brett Valley. Chef James Lay dreams up imaginative menus that showcase the best local ingredients in season, from Mersea Island oysters from over the border in Essex, to Suffolk chicken stuffed with truffle and parmesan, plus favourites like burgers and steaks. Afternoon teas and Sunday roasts come highly recommended, too.
-
A spa to revitalise and renew: Once you’ve finished marvelling at your sophisticated yet homely room, prepare to be further impressed with a trip to the spa. Feel pampered from head to toe with massages to melt away the stress and facials to leave you looking tip-top (fees apply). After, unwind in subterranean spa area where there’s a sauna, hot tub and use of both indoor and outdoor infinity pools.
How to get there
The hotel is around 20 minutes from Ipswich by car, and 30 minutes from Harwich which has cross-channel ferries. The nearest train station is Manningtree – about 15 minutes’ drive, which you can reach from Ipswich station and has links to London Liverpool Street.
Good to know
Please note that the spa is only available to guests aged 18 and over.

Ipswich
The countryside surrounding the village of Upper Layham is one of those quaintly charming places that make you see why the county of Suffolk so inspired the artist, John Constable: bucolic scenes of gently babbling rivers and picturesque millponds, rolling vales, gently swaying fields of wheat. Take a stroll around the pink-painted thatched cottages and narrow lanes, following a network of footpaths and bridleways that peel off from the village and run along the river Brett and long-forgotten railway lines – there are plenty of pubs and cafes, should you need refreshing. For more dreamy days out, the Dedham Vale National Landscape promises vineyards, bluebell woods in the spring, nature reserves and postcard-pretty villages.
If you’d prefer a more relaxed dose of seaside charm, drive to Felixstowe, where you can stroll along the pier or relax on the sandy beach. Elsewhere, history buffs shouldn’t miss the chance to delve into England's rich past with a visit to nearby Sutton Hoo, the famous Anglo-Saxon burial ground.
