Sea and city bliss from Malaga to Seville with Andalusian flair

Day 1-2: Malaga

Set on the glittering shores of Spain’s vibrant Costa del Sol, Malaga is an enticing blend of Mediterranean coastal charm, modern architecture and surprisingly deep pockets of culture. Pops of colour from the turquoise sea, sun-warmed stone buildings and lush green spaces might well have inspired the young Pablo Picasso, who spent his early years here. The Museo Picasso Málaga is therefore a must-see, and another gem not to miss is the Roman theatre, unearthed in the 1950s and dating back to the early Roman Empire. History buff or not, a good old day at the beach is just a bus or bike ride away – think seafood restaurants, raffia sun shades and calm clear waters.

Drifting through the city without a plan is also a great plan, and possibly the best way to absorb the spirit of sun-soaked Spain. With resplendent gilded churches on one corner, and traditional tapas joints and lively jazz bars round the next, you’ll hardly know which way to look. Stylish boutiques stay open till cocktail hour, and you can take your pick of atmospheric eating spots with tables set out on the old town’s winding cobblestone streets.

Day 3: Malaga to Seville

Squeeze every last drop from the sunny coastal city before getting ready to board your train. Settle into your comfortable seat and gaze out on the rolling Andalusian landscape; before you know it, you’ll be pulling up in Seville, where you might just tuck into some local fare before checking into your hotel.

Day 4-5: Seville

Into the heart of true Flamenco flair… rise and shine, and step into the old-world charm of Andalusia’s capital. The majestic Moorish architecture and ornately tiled bridges whisper of the city’s Islamic heritage, and you can really drift back in time by floating down the canal of the Plaza de España on a row boat, or otherwise hop in a horse-drawn carriage and clatter off through the city’s streets and charming squares.

Not to miss while you’re here are Las Setas, a striking contemporary structure with sky-level walkways to gaze out across the city. Descend into the Encarnación neighbourhood, a bohemian melting pot of vintage boutiques and delectable tapas spots. Stop for a drink at El Rinconcillo, Spain’s oldest bar thriving since 1670, and closer to your hotel in the north be sure to check out the trendy area of Macarena, a refreshing mix of Baroque architecture, street art and classic Sevillian eateries.
