See Albania’s ancient cities and stunning scenery on a group tour with an English-speaking guide – includes flights, shared transfers and excursions
Day 1-2: UK/Ireland – Tirana, Albania
Board your flight and touch down in Albania’s capital, an interesting mixture of Ottoman-era architecture and brightly painted buildings, cradled by distant mountains. Settle into your hotel and enjoy some leisure time exploring the vicinity.
Arise well rested, and after breakfast prepare to transfer to the picturesque and historic Kruja for a day tour. Here, at the country’s former capital, you’ll be able to see the city’s imposing castle, bustling bazaar and the Skanderbeg Museum, one of the country’s most important museums offering both great views and fascinating insights into the country’s history. Back in Tirana, set off on an evening tour to discover the beguiling capital’s iconic landmarks and architecture in the twilight hour. Two nights in Tirana.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 3: Tirana – Lezhe – Shkoder
After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the stone-walled charms of coastal Lezhe. On the agenda for today’s excursion are a visit to the hilltop castle with stunning views over the Bronze Age city walls, the Skanderbeg Mausoleum (dedicated to Albania’s national hero) and a delightful, seasonal lunch of traditional Albanian cuisine. Next, it’s on to Shkoder, a melting-pot of artistic, religious and cultural traditions. Bordered by the magical mountain scenes of the Albanian Alps, you’ll get to see the historical city’s varied gems like the old bazaar, Catholic cathedral and Shkoder’s mosque. Your guide will lead you up to Rozafa Castle, from where you can gaze down at the wonderful Lake Shkoder – only the largest in the Balkans. One night in Shkoder.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 4: Shkoder – Durres – Berat
Enjoy a fortifying breakfast, then you’ll be transferred to Albania’s key port city of Durres, positioned on a picture-perfect stretch of Adriatic coastline. The city is known for its well-preserved Roman Amphitheatre dating back to the 2nd century. Witness this archeological treasure first hand with your tour guide, who’ll also take you to the Byzantine Forum, city walls, and the Roman baths. Come evening, it’s off to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched above the Osum River. You’ll soon learn why it’s dubbed the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’ as you traverse the Gorica Bridge and visit the fortress, the Onufri Museum and ancient orthodox churches. One night in Berat.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 5: Berat – Ardenica Monastery – Apollonia – Vlore
After breakfast, you’ll transfer for a tour of Ardenica Monastery, a pocket of peace amidst the verdant green hills – also known as Skanderberg’s wedding place. Apollonia is next on the list, an ancient Roman hilltop city where you’ll be guided through moving ruins that speak of a time long ago. Last but not least, you’ll head to the pretty coastal city of Vlore. Here, the guided tour will uncover the wonders of this historic city, in particular the striking Independence Monument commemorating Albania’s separation from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Perhaps you could round off the day by trying some fresh seafood at Vlore’s authentic, coastal tavernas, before hitting the hay well sated on stories and sights. One night in Vlore.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 6: Vlore – Butrint – Saranda
Today, you’ll have a chance to discover Albania’s gorgeous glittering coast. After breakfast, your transfer will glide you past beautiful Bay of Vlore views where the mountains slope down towards the aquamarine waters of the Ionian Sea. Just outside Saranda, enjoy lunch in the stunning coastal village of Ksamil, followed by free time to enjoy the powdery white sands, crystalline waters and nearby islets. In the afternoon, you’ll be hopping over to Butrint, home to Albania’s key archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site no less. Your guide will uncover the secrets of these ruins spanning Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, sunk in the region’s lush landscape. One night in Saranda.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 7: Saranda – Mesopotam – Blue Eye – Gjirokastra – Tirana
After breakfast, you’ll transfer slowly to Gjirokastra, a unique, UNESCO-listed city cradled by wild mountain scenery. On the way, you’ll stop for a visit to Mesopotam Monastery, its moving frescoes dating back to the 11th century; its foundations an ancient fortress. Next, you'll marvel at the rare beauty of Blue Eye National Park, with jewel-like, deep aquamarine waters and flora and fauna bursting with life.
Gjirokastra is also known as ‘The City of Stone’, with cobbled limestone streets winding through the hillside, slate-roofed houses and an enchanting stone-hewn castle. Once you arrive, your city tour will uncover local wonders, including the Bazaar Mosque and the Arms Museum inside the castle. You’ll transfer back up to Tirana, with free time to enjoy anything you missed in the capital last time. One night in Tirana.
Meals: breakfast.
Day 8: Tirana – UK/Ireland
Depending on the time of your flight, enjoy breakfast and perhaps a little more leisure time, before hopping in your airport transfer and waving farewell to a happy and enriching holiday.
