Escape to the Inner Hebrides and bed down at a coastal abode with an award-winning restaurant and championship links golf course - includes breakfast, one dinner and more

  • Stylish Hebridean hideout: Where peatlands meet sweeping dunes and crashing Atlantic waves, Another Place, The Machrie is a picture-perfect gem located on the captivating Isle of Islay, just off the west coast of Scotland. In delightful contrast to its wild surroundings, the hotel's modern interiors are adorned with eclectic artwork and bathed in natural light - the ideal space for unwinding after long windswept walks on the nearby seven-mile beach.

  • Fresh, seasonal flavours: Indulge in exceptional dining at the AA Rosette and 4* Silver awarded 18 Restaurant and Bar. The menu brilliantly reflects Islay's wild, fresh landscape, brimming with local produce. Expect exquisite Loch Gruinart oysters, Islay scallops, Port Askaig Lobster, sumptuous cuts of local meats, and kitchen garden vegetables. In the evening, unwind with a drink in the courtyard or lounge before heading out to the terrace to look up into the star-studded sky.

  • Wild wellness wonders: For a relaxing outdoor experience, head to the wild garden to enjoy two wood-fired hot tubs, a cold tub, outdoor sauna, and spectacular sunsets across Laggan Bay. Afterwards, gather around the fire pit to toast Tunnock’s teacakes and warm up with a dram or two of whisky. Active types can hit the gym, while those who’ve been practicing their swing on the social green or 7,000-yard golf course redesigned by DJ Russell, should ease aching muscles with a soothing Ishga seaweed treatment (fees apply).

How to get there

Islay Airport offers daily flights to and from Glasgow in as little as 25 minutes and is an easy five-minute drive from the hotel. Alternatively, it’s a 10-minute drive to Port Ellen Ferry Terminal which offers direct links to Kennacraig on the Scottish mainland. The scenic ferry transfer takes around two and a half hours and offers views of the Mull of Kintyre and Arran’s highest peak. We recommend pre-booking a taxi before your arrival or hiring a car to make the most of this beautiful landscape.

Argyll and Bute

Known as the 'Queen of the Hebrides', Islay (pronounced eye-la) is the fifth largest Scottish island. Home to approximately 3,000 residents, its abundant wildlife was notably featured in Attenborough’s Wild Isles series. Spend your days enjoying leisurely walks along the soft sands and sloping dunes of the nearby beach, fatbiking across the expansive shore, or braving the invigorating waters with a refreshing wild swim. Keep an eye on the skies for golden eagles soaring from the island's highest peaks, or take to the water for a unique perspective, perhaps sea kayaking with curious seals or embarking on a wildlife boat tour from nearby Port Ellen.

The island also invites deeper exploration: immerse yourself in Islay's famous heritage with visits to its world-renowned whisky distilleries, offering a taste of liquid gold. Lace up your boots for beautiful coastal hikes, or venture inland along trails that wind past picturesque waterfalls and rocky outcrops. Nature lovers will find solace at the The Oa RSPB Reserve, teeming with birdlife, and a trip to the iconic square Carraig Fhada Lighthouse is a must. Just a 10-minute drive away, Port Ellen serves as a charming hub, offering a warm welcome with its quaint harbour and small collection of local shops.
