Day 1: Stone Town, Zanzibar

Get excited to touch down in the pristine paradise of Zanzibar, where you’ll be transferred promptly to your hotel. Settle in and freshen up before venturing out into the UNESCO-listed Stone Town. In Zanzibar’s former capital, striking Arabian, Persian, Indian and European architectural influences converge. Possible sights to see include the unique House of Wonders, Freddy Mercury’s former home (and museum), or the bustling Darajani Market where you can sample tropical fruit and local spices. Come evening, you could tuck into fresh seafood at one of the rooftop restaurants looking out across the sea. (Please note that these are not included, but suggestions).

Day 2-3: Saadani National Park

Breakfast at your hotel as day breaks over Stone Town, and enjoy a leisurely morning in town before your transfer arrives at 2pm in time to catch your 3.30pm scenic flight by small plane to nip across to mainland Tanzania. Due to the plane's limited luggage capacity, a maximum of 15kg of luggage is allowed per person for this leg of the journey. Any additional luggage can be safely stored with Escapade Zanzibar, and returned to you promptly on your return.

Your Saadani National Park ranger will greet you on the other side and drive you to Saadani Safari Lodge. Here, lush green savannah and wild thickets run right down to the blues of the Indian Ocean – and you’ll be diving right into the thick of it with your first game drive. Become acquainted with the park’s residents – lions, elephants and giraffes to name a few – before a classic evening bush sundowner. Back at the lodge, unwind in your quarters before dinner by the ocean.

The next day, a warm coffee or hot chocolate brought to your room will soften the blow of a 5am start for your open-vehicle game drive, and it’ll all be worth it to glimpse elephants, lions, buffalo, and leopards with a little luck. After a hearty breakfast back at the lodge, the Wami River safari will wind you through the habitat of crocodiles, hippos and native birds; after lunch, you can join the guided bicycle safari along the beach to spot coastal wildlife.

Later on, you’ll hop back on the Zanzibar-bound small plane, where you’ll be reunited with your luggage and transferred to your Zanzibar beachfront escape.

Day 4-8: Matemwe, Zanzibar

This time you’ll be staying on the island’s northeastern tip, with all the time in the world to luxuriate in Zanzibar’s famous marine beauty: soft, pearl-white sands, glittering blue shallows and coral reefs home to the colourful creatures of the sea. Despite its beautiful hotels, Matemwe maintains a quaint fishing village charm, setting an authentic, serene scene to dip your toes in the shallows, drift off with a gripping novel, or perhaps plumb the depths of the underwater world on scuba or snorkelling adventures. Mnemba Atoll is just offshore, a coral enclave bursting with marine life – you might just spot dolphins and green turtles.

Spend your days in paradise exactly as you please, before the time to transfer to the airport for your UK-bound flight regrettably rolls around.

With the nine-night itinerary, you will stay seven nights in Matemwe.

A 7kg hand luggage and a 23kg hold luggage allowance per person is included, as well as shared transfers.

For convenience, any additional luggage can be safely stored with Escapade Zanzibar. Their trusted driver will collect and secure your belongings before your safari and ensure they are returned to you promptly upon your return.

From London Heathrow, via Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), with Ethiopian Airlines:
Outbound: departing at 21:00, arriving at 12:55 (following day)
Inbound: departing at 17:00, arriving at 7:00 (following day)

From Manchester, via Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), with Ethiopian Airlines:
Outbound: departing at 18:00, arriving at 12:55 (following day)
Inbound: departing at 17:00, arriving at 12:55 (following day)

Please note that both your outbound and inbound flights are overnight, so please bear this in mind when planning the time you'll be away. The date you select as your check-in date will be the day you'll fly out from the UK, and you'll arrive in Tanzania the following day to commence your 7 or 9-night holiday. The check-out date will be the day that you'll board your inbound flight back to the UK. Since your inbound is also overnight, you'll be away for a total of 9 or 11 nights.
