A down-to-earth, eco stay between the Western Lake District and Cumbrian Coast, with a popular restaurant and family warmth – includes breakfast, one optional dinner credit and more

  • Warm, local welcome: The Melbreak Hotel sits on the western fringe of the Lake District National Park. The humble, slate-roofed abode makes for a warm welcome after hiking, cycling and rambling around the nation’s famously beautiful lakes to one side, and the Cumbrian coast on the other. The family-run hotel ensures optimal comfort in its 36 cosy bedrooms, with Pure Lakes bath products, fluffy towels aplenty and plush sinking beds.

  • Dependable dining: Your hotel’s Conservatory Restaurant is on hand for breakfast, lunch and dinner, flooded with plenty of natural light and pretty, patterned furnishings. The à la carte menu features indulgent dishes from pan-seared duck to a juicy mushroom burger, and there’s also a classic afternoon tea with scones and delicious savouries. You might be lucky enough to visit during the hotel’s popular tapas night, featuring all the favourites washed down with some refreshing sangria.

  • Rooted in nature: Here, life is fuelled by an all-round sustainable ethos. Cosy interiors are heated with a wood-chip biomass boiler, power is drawn from solar panels and seasonal menus draw from the bounty of nature. Enjoy a truly down-to-earth, responsible stay that pays homage to the great outdoors.

How to get thereThe closest train station to your hotel is Workington, but connections from most major cities tend to pass through Penrith or Carlisle, from where it’s a coach or train connection of about one to two hours. We recommend driving in order to get the most out of the surrounding countryside: those heading from the south should follow the M6 northbound, whilst those coming from the north should head south toward Carlisle.
Good to knowPlease note that reservations are required for the restaurant as it tends to get fully booked, and that afternoon tea requires booking and payment 48 hours in advance. Tapas evenings take place on the last Friday and Saturday of every other month throughout the year. Breakfast hours vary, served at 7-9am on weekdays and 8-10am on weekends and bank holidays.

Entry requirements

The passport, visa and health requirements at the time of booking can be viewed on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for UK citizens, and on the Department of Foreign Affairs website for IE citizens. It is your responsibility to ensure that you and all members of your party are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents, and in compliance with any other immigration/entry requirements before you travel, including whether your passport must be machine readable or which visas/waivers may be required for entry, such as ESTA for USA travel and/or ETIAS for EU travel. Please also be sure to check the validity of your passport and allow up to 10 weeks for passport renewals.

Workington

Set where rolling Cumbrian countryside meets the coast, the hotel makes for a great jumping-off point for northeasterly adventures: exhilarating mountain walks, the wildly beautiful trails of the Lake District and the tidal shores of the Cumbrian Coast are within easy reach. Once you’ve had your fill of nature, be sure to make a visit to the nearby market town of Cockermouth where you can visit the childhood home of William Wordsworth, or tour the historic Jennings Brewery.
