Bed down at a five-star coaching inn in Newton-by-the-Sea, boasting eclectic boutique rooms and a top-rated gastropub moments from the beach - includes breakfast, dinner credit options, and late check-out

  • Rural romance: This isn't your average country pub; The Joiners Arms describes itself as a place that "puts the luxe into luxury inns", and it certainly delivers. With a five-star rating, this coaching inn blends shabbily chic rustic details - think exposed brick, reclaimed wood, and roaring fires - with undeniably flamboyant design. It’s the perfect dog-friendly bolthole (muddy paws are very welcome) for those who want to experience the wild beauty of Northumberland without compromising on indulgence.

  • Gastro goodness: You won’t go hungry here; the inn is renowned for its hearty, honest, and locally sourced fare. The kitchen provides delicious dishes that celebrate the region, from the renowned fish and chips to Northumbrian Pan Haggerty and seasonal specials. Whether you’re tucking into a Sunday roast with all the trimmings or grabbing a light bite after a beach walk, the menu is packed with flavour and served with a side of Geordie hospitality.

  • Boutique boudoirs: Each of the guest rooms is individually designed to be a sanctuary of cool, mixing plush fabrics with quirky original features. You might find yourself under an antler chandelier in a four-poster bed, or soaking in a double-ended roll-top bath that sits decadently in the corner of the room. From the velvet throws to the luxury Noble Isle toiletries, every detail has been curated to ensure your nights are as memorable as your days exploring the coast.

How to get thereThe Joiners Arms is located in Newton-by-the-Sea, approximately 15 to 20 minutes by car from Alnwick. The nearest train station is Alnmouth, which is well-connected on the East Coast Main Line and is roughly a 20-minute taxi ride from the inn. If you are flying, Newcastle International Airport is about an hour's drive away. We’d recommend hiring a car in order to get the most out of the beautiful coast and castles nearby.

High Newton-by-the-Sea

You are perfectly placed to explore the sweeping drama of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Your hotel is located in the quiet hamlet of High Newton-by-the-Sea, just a short stroll from the sandy stretch of Low Newton and the majestic Embleton Bay. It’s a prime spot for blowing away the cobwebs with a coastal walk; head north along the dunes and you’ll be treated to iconic views of the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, silhouetted dramatically against the skyline.

History buffs are spoilt for choice here. A short drive (around 20 minutes) takes you to the market town of Alnwick, home to the magnificent Alnwick Castle - famous as a filming location for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey - and the enchanting Alnwick Garden, with its Grand Cascade and Poison Garden. If you fancy venturing a little further, the imposing Bamburgh Castle is about 25 minutes away by car, standing guard over a pristine beach that is often voted one of the best in the UK.

For a taste of traditional fishing life, make the short drive south to the harbour village of Craster (under 15 minutes away). Famous world-over for its oak-smoked kippers, it is also the starting point for a stunning coastal walk to the Dunstanburgh Castle ruins. Whether you’re birdwatching at the Newton Pool nature reserve right on your doorstep or simply hunting for the best crab sandwich in the county, this corner of England is brimming with charm.
