A wonderful northern Spain road trip from modern Bilbao to medieval towns and Rioja region wineries – includes breakfast, flights, excursions & more
Drive from coastal Basque Country bliss to the wonderful Rioja region wineries near Laguardia on this wonderful, five-day escape. You’ll spend the first three nights in Bilbao: tucked snugly inland off the Cantabrian Sea, the historic trading port is home to an impressive mix of Gothic architecture and groundbreaking contemporary sculpture, all cradled by the majestic Basque Mountains. Entrance to the iconic Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is included, and you’ll have the chance to discover gems like San Sebastián and the mythical islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe along the coast, sampling a new pintxos bar everyday, of course.
On the third day, depart for Laguardia, taking a scenic route as you trace the border between the Basque country and the wine-rich region of La Rioja. Stop off for a visit at the medieval town of Vitoria-Gasteiz, and behold vineyards and historic villages for miles from a high point in Rivas de Tereso. In Laguardia, enjoy an enriching visit (and tasting) to the prestigious Vivanco Winery and Museum of Wine and Culture, with time to follow winding roads to other notable vineyards in the area. Chic, winery restaurants and friendly, rustic eateries are on hand for lunches and dinners.
