Days 1-4: San Francisco or Las Vegas

Whether you choose to kick off your adventure from the misty hills of coastal California’s San Francisco or the dazzling desert heat and neon lights of Las Vegas, you’re in for a good dose of classic American culture. In San Fran, behold the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, or head to Fisherman’s Wharf to say hello to sun bathing sea lions. Jump on the old fashioned cable cars to scale notoriously steep streets, and hop off to browse colourful book stores or visit the de Young Museum if fine art’s your thing.

If it’s Las Vegas you go for, soak up the thrills of the desert’s neon light oasis, wandering down the bustling Strip past world-famous resorts and casinos. Be sure not to miss the choreographed dance of water and music at the Fountains of Bellagio. Browse luxury boutiques or make a visit to the Mob Museum for a lick of true crime history. From Las Vegas, you’ll have the chance to embark on wild Nevada canyon adventures (see ‘Optional Excursions’ for more information).

At the end of your San Francisco or Las Vegas days, you’ll be transferred to the airport to board your connecting flight to Salt Lake City.

Days 5-6: Salt Lake City

Touch down in Utah’s Salt Lake City, a vibrant nexus of history and culture cradled by the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. The impressive Temple Square is quite the monument to Mormon heritage, and the Natural History Museum of Utah is a must-see for its epic dinosaur exhibit. Be sure to check out SLC’s evolving foodie scene, from Mexican grub and unique Utah pastrami burgers to the hip 9th and 9th neighbourhood with walkable food stops.

Embark on optional excursions to the glorious Salt Lake and its island populated with bison, or the Bonneville Salt Flats, a vast, mirror-like scene favoured by photographers (see ‘Optional Excursions’ for more information).

Days 7-8: Canyon Spirit Train (Salt Lake City – Denver)

Get excited to board the magical Canyon Spirit Train, carving a truly cinematic route through the sienna-coloured scenery of deserts, canyons, rivers and archways formed by nature herself. You’ll get to witness it all through the panoramic, glass-dome windows of your comfy carriage, punctuated by meals, snacks and refreshing drinks served by friendly hosts. Southwest-style dishes are inspired by the very regions that pass before you, with a side of storytelling from the hosts.

The first leg of the journey takes you through the mountainous land of Provo, then down into the iconic Price River Canyon. Marvel at epic rock formations, and on arrival at Thompson Springs, you’ll be transferred for an overnight stay in the adventure base of Moab. Hop back aboard the Canyon Spirit the following afternoon, for dinner with a view as you cross the Utah-Colorado border. You’ll stay at a hotel in Glenwood Springs, and board the train again the next day in time to have breakfast and lunch and sip your coffee before the canyons of the Colorado River, en route to Denver.

Days 9-10: Denver

Touch down in Colorado’s ‘Mile High City’, a sun-drenched urban hub perfectly positioned where the Great Plains meet the soaring Rocky Mountains. The historic Larimer Square is quite the monument to Denver’s frontier past with its Victorian architecture, and the Denver Art Museum is a must-see for its world-class indigenous collections and bold, geometric design. Be sure to check out Denver’s legendary craft beer scene, from pioneer microbreweries to the hip RiNo (River North) Art District, where colorful street murals lead you to industrial-chic food halls and some of the best green chili in the West.

You’ll have the chance to embark on an adventure to a Rocky Mountains peak and the untamed Garden of the Gods (see ‘Optional Excursions’ for more information).

On the final day, wave goodbye to an iconic American adventure, as you head to the airport for your UK-bound flight.

Grand Canyon West, Hoover Dam stop and Skywalk (optional lunch)

Set out to see the glorious Grand Canyon West, skipping the lines with VIP bus access. You’ll get to hop out at Eagle Point and Guano Point, coveted spots to marvel at wild canyon views stretching for miles, and pose for pictures to take home, of course. Marvel at the great Hoover Dam, and upgrade your ticket to step out onto the scintillating skywalk. Transfers are included, with the option to add lunch if you wish.

Lower Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend day tour with lunch

Venture out to the ethereal Lower Antelope Canyon, journeying into Arizona with a local Navajo guide. You’ll get to climb down into the depths of the slot canyon to marvel at wave-like sandstone walls and glowing beams of light, and your guide will help you take great pictures. Marvel at the Horseshoe Bend, and hike to the edge for a spectacular view of the Colorado River’s dramatic curves. Transfers, lunch and bottled water are included.

Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks with lunch

See the crimson spires of Bryce Canyon and the soaring sandstone cliffs of Zion, checking off two of Utah’s most iconic National Parks in a single day. You’ll get to wander through the world-famous ‘hoodoos’ at Bryce and marvel at the massive, sun-drenched canyon walls of Zion. Marvel at the great Virgin River gorge along the way, and soak up the unique geology of the high desert. Transfers, lunch and bottled water are included.

Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island day tour

Discover the expansive beauty of the Great Salt Lake and the rugged wilderness of Antelope Island, home to free-roaming bison and spectacular mountain views. Behold the world-famous buoyant waters with great viewing opportunities of free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorns, and millions of birds in their natural habitat. Your guide’s storytelling will animate the fascinating ecology and history of this ancient lakebed. Transfers and bottled water are included.

Bonneville Salt Flats adventure

Witness the surreal Bonneville Salt Flats, one of the flattest and most otherworldly places on Earth. You’ll get to walk across the shimmering white salt crust to marvel at the vast, horizon-stretching landscape, a mirror-like scene when covered with water in winter and spring. Marvel at the ‘Tree of Utah’ sculpture standing in the desert wilderness, and enjoy a photo stop at the Great Salt Lake State Park along the way. You’ll be collected from and returned to the meeting point in Salt Lake City, with bottled water and a professional guide included.

Rocky Mountain adventure

Behold the high-alpine beauty of the Rockies on a scenic half-day escape into the mountains near Denver. You’ll stop off at Clear Creek Canyon to wander along the river, followed by a visit to the sleepy mining town of Idaho Springs. Marvel at the panoramic vistas from Echo Lake at the base of Mount Blue Sky, and soak up the rugged grandeur of the Front Range. You’ll be collected from and returned to the pick-up point in Denver, and water bottle refills (please bring your own bottle) and guide are included.

Small-group tour of Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods

Set out to see the dramatic red sandstone spires of the Garden of the Gods and the towering summit of Pikes Peak. You’ll get to explore ancient rock formations, like the famous ‘Balanced Rock’ – quite the photo backdrop. You’ll pass by ‘America’s Mountain’, and then have an hour in the historic town of Manitou Springs, a lovely spot to buy lunch if you wish. You’ll be collected from and returned to the pick-up point in Denver, and bottled water and park admission are included.
