Sodankylä, Finland

Sodankylä is often described as the most authentic heart of Lapland, where the pace of life slows to match the rhythm of the wilderness. Begin your exploration with a short walk into the town centre to visit the Old Church of Sodankylä, a beautiful 17th-century wooden structure that stands as one of the oldest in Finland. For a deeper dive into local culture, the Alariesto Gallery showcases the vibrant life and folklore of the Sámi people through evocative paintings. Nature enthusiasts should not miss a trip to the nearby Urho Kekkonen National Park or Pyhä-Luosto National Park, both reachable within a short drive, where ancient fells and amethyst mines offer a glimpse into the region’s rugged geological history.

If your visit coincides with the summer solstice, you may find yourself immersed in the world-renowned Midnight Sun Film Festival, an international event that brings a unique cinematic energy to this quiet Arctic town. During the winter months, the lack of light pollution makes the area a premier spot for viewing the Aurora Borealis. For an off-the-beaten-track recommendation, head to the nearby Riipi Puukko workshop to see traditional Finnish knives being crafted by hand, or simply spend an afternoon ice fishing on a frozen lake, embracing the stillness that defines life above the Arctic Circle.
