Pompeii
The iconic ruins of Pompeii, destroyed and preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius, are around half an hour’s drive away. You don’t have to be a history buff to be awed by the remains of the former residents, frozen in time as they recoiled from the volcanic blast. A short drive further up the coast are the remains of Herculaneum, where even ancient wooden artefacts were preserved by the ash. If all that hasn’t put you off, it’s possible to visit the culprit, Vesuvius itself – while it’s closely monitored for safety, there’s still a thrill to be had in climbing one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
