Optional excursions

• Private tour of Pyramids and Sphinx (half day, day 2) •

You will be picked up at your hotel to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Pyramid of Cheops! The three Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are an absolute must-see, thought to have been built in the fourth dynasty of the ancient kingdom of Egypt, which was perhaps one of the first major civilizations on earth. An experienced guide will be there to give you a detailed insight into the site and the pyramids. Afterwards, you will be brought back to your hotel.

• Guided excursions during the Nile cruise (day 3, 4, 5) •

On this excursion package, you can visit many of the impressive monuments that have been preserved from ancient Egypt during the Nile cruise, along with an English or German-speaking guide. You’ll visit the famous Valley of the Kings, where none other than Tutankhamun, as well as other pharaohs from the New Kingdom are buried, learn more about Hatshepsut, one of the only female pharaohs, and face the Colossi of Memnon, two 18 metre high statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, which were built 3400 years ago. You will also visit the temple of the falcon god, Horus, in Edfu. This is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, which began construction in 237 BC. In the city of Kom Ombo, you can find a temple of the same name, dedicated to not one but two gods: Horus, and the crocodile god Sobek. In Aswan, you can marvel at the High Dam, built to control flooding of the Nile, as well as the mysterious unfinished obelisk, a large granite structure still attached to the surrounding rock. Finally, you’ll visit the Philae temple, which rests on an island, and is dedicated to the fertility goddess, Isis.
