North Portugal
The north of Portugal is a scenic jewel with natural diversity, with the culturally rich cities of Guimarães and Braga. Take a trip to the historic city centre of Braga and visit the oldest cathedral in Portugal. Braga's centre has many attractive old buildings, as well as the Bom Jesus do Monte church, with its decorative staircase. In Guimarães, visit the historic centre with its charming squares, traditional houses and cafes, and then take the cable car up to the Penha hill to enjoy the view from the summit. The castle ruins of Guimarães and the beautiful Gothic architecture of the Ducal Palace are also worth seeing.
Heading further north you will discover the increasingly lush landscapes. On the Rio Minho, on the border with Spain, there are several wine regions that are known for their light and lively Vinho Verde and the Alvarinho variety. Allow yourself to be spoiled with culinary delights in the numerous quintas, the traditional Portuguese wineries, and try not only top wines, but also fresh fish, the "caldo verde" (green soup) typical of Portugal, and smoked specialties from Melgaço.
Further thrills in this part of the world include white water rafting on the Minho, and hikes in the Peneda-Gerés National Park. Both allow you to get to know the beautiful natural landscapes of the region. You can also visit some castles and quaint churches here. The Castello do Melgaço in Vila, the ruins of Castro Laboreiro and the church of Paderne are all worth a visit.
