Gdansk - the Baltic Gem

Welcome to Gdansk - one of the oldest cities in the country, and the original royal capital of Poland! Formerly known as Danzig, Gdansk's origins date back to the 10th century - but today you'll find an enthralling blend of history and modernity, for a truly memorable city experience.

Discover its medieval legacy with a visit to some of the oldest remains in the city, including the wonderfully preserved Malbork Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning over 200,000 m2, the castle once held over 3,000 Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, and the fortress is still a formidable sight. You'll also see Gdansk's historic legacy elsewhere, including the site of the Gdansk Crane - built in the 14th century, it was once the biggest working crane in the world!

Take a stroll around the old town of the city, and you're bound to fall in love - with charming pastel coloured buildings surrounding the square, and the beautiful Rococo masterpiece, Neptune's Fountain at the centre, it's the perfect place to relax and stroll. Stop into a pretty local cafe to indulge in a traditional rose-flavoured pastry and coffee, or have a classic Gdansk lunch in one of its popular milk bars. Gdansk is also renowned for being the capital of amber - you can find out more about this enchanting golden stone in the Amber Museum, and search for your own amber treasure to take home in the city's boutiques.

In Gdansk, you'll also fast forward into the future, with its buzzing urban centre, crowned by the towering Olivia Star, the tallest building in Poland. Head up the dizzying 180 metres to enjoy spectacular views over the Tri-City area, with views as far as the dramatic Baltic Coast. With something to discover at every turn, Gdansk is your ideal city getaway!
