Search for the Northern Lights from the Finnish coast and stay in a one-of-a-kind lighthouse hotel - on a half-board basis with flights and more

Think of Finland in winter and a few things probably come to mind: crisp mornings with the sun low in the sky, blankets of endless snow coating fields and forests, and starry skies filling the night with magic. Seek out this kind of solace for yourself at the Arctic Lighthouse Hotel, perched on the Finnish island of Hailuoto.

The island itself - jutting out to sea close to Oulu, a quaint city on Finland's coast - is the largest in the Bothnian Bay, but still beautifully rural. Nature lovers will enjoy the calm and stillness that comes with staying here, where hobbies range from wildlife-spotting and fishing to snowshoe hikes and, of course, a hunt for the elusive Northern Lights.

During your stay at the one-of-a-kind property at the base of a former lighthouse, you'll embark on a thrilling e-bike excursion and seek out the Aurora Borealis in all its ethereal glory. Accompanied by a guide, traverse your way through the snowy forest to a clearing where a roaring campfire and hot drinks await, and pause until the Northern Lights magically appear. As well as this, there's a host of optional excursions on offer to make your trip that little more exciting - read below for more.

  • Half-board basis included

  • Two-hour guided Northern Lights e-bike tour included

  • Optional winter excursions available

Optional excursions (fees apply)

Evening snowshoe hike (two hours)

As the sun sets over the endless sky, pull up your snowshoes and go exploring. A guide will pick you up from the Lighthouse Hotel and prep you for a hike through the snowy wilderness. There'll be ample opportunity to spot the Northern Lights (as elusive as they are). We'd recommend bringing some snacks along for the ride, and you can even borrow a thermos from reception to keep the chills at bay.

Guided e-bike tour (three hours)

Discover the beauty of nature on this daytime tour through the wintry landscapes of Hailuoto. With a guide, you'll cycle along nature trails and have the chance to snap breathtaking photos of the landscape, before reaching a campfire and enjoying a hot drink and snack. Helmets and bikes are provided (safety first, of course).

Beer tasting at Hailuodon Panimo

What better way to stave off the cold than a stiff pint? Discover four different types of local beers at Hailuodon Panimo, the first organic brewery in Finland where all the beers are made from organic raw materials. You’ll be driven to and from the brewery in a group, so you needn’t worry about sampling more than your fair share of ale.

Private sauna session (one hour)

Fancy some alone time? The hotel’s sauna is available to rent out privately by the hour, making your stay that little more exclusive. You can even arrange to pick up drinks from the beforehand and take them with you (we’d probably leave them outside, however, as we’re sure they’ll heat up pretty quickly).

Arctic Lighthouse Hotel

  • Hotel
  • Marjaniemi, Finland

Perched on the coast of Hailuoto island, the Arctic Lighthouse Hotel - or 'Luotsihotelli' in the Finnish tongue - makes the perfect escape for those looking for scenery and seclusion. Set at the foot of a former lighthouse, this exceptional bolthole sports maritime-chic interiors befitting its station: think raw materials blended with industrial features to create a truly impressive space.

As you'd imagine, there's a heavy emphasis of seafood and local ingredients at the hotel's restaurant, Aava. With a menu that celebrates the region's heritage and culture, the restaurant is open for delicious breakfasts, flavoursome lunches, and heartwarming dinners. In warmer months, outside seating make it possible to soak up views of the imposing landscape. Please note the restaurant times change with the seasons, as does the menu to make dishes as sustainable as possible.

When it comes to the guest rooms, Standard rooms carry on the same rustic style as the rest of the property: there's plenty of wooden accents and homely accents that make it a comforting retreat. You'll have a private bathroom, as well as a TV and hairdryer in the room plus Wi-Fi. Some of the rooms are pet friendly, but this must be arranged separately after booking.
